Today little kittens Sara Jane Stone has come by to talk about her writing process. I absolutely love her Independence Falls series. I’ll have a review of Wild With You tomorrow. 😉
I’m crazy about Facebook parties. Answering readers’ questions, introducing them to my work, hosting giveaways—I love interacting with readers. At a recent party, a number of readers asked about my writing process. I’m fascinated by the tidbits other authors share on social media. How many words do they write each day? Where do their ideas come from? (Jill Shalvis has the best answer to this question—a warehouse in Toledo 🙂 )
When one of my favorite bloggers (who has supported the Independence Falls series from the beginning—thanks Kitty Kelly!) invited me to be her guest, I decided to share a write a brief behind the scenes look at my process.
Wild. Chaotic. Fun.
Those three words sum up how I write. I’ve tried setting daily word count goals, but it never works. As soon as I create a plan, one of my preschoolers stays home sick for a day. So I write whenever I can, taking a day here and there for a writer’s retreat.
My writer’s retreats are like heaven. I leave my wonderful, supportive husband with the kids and go to a quiet place without Internet for the day. I write for eight, ten, sometimes twenty-four hours straight, pausing only to order take-out. And I love every minute I spend with my characters.
The rest of the time, I scribble bits of dialog while cooking dinner. I’ve seen other authors post pictures of their picture-perfect writing view on Facebook. My view includes a lazy cat and a room full of Legos I plan to pick up after I write just one more scene.
I sit down to write a new story with a one to three page summary. Beyond that, I follow the characters, making it up as I go. Some scenes only take a few hours to write, while others take days. But even with deadlines looming, I’m always having fun crafting the story.
As for my ideas, they come from the people around me, news articles, and other books. Sometimes my wonderful agent will mention a popular trope and an idea will spring to mind. Often while I’m writing one story, an idea for another appears seemingly out of nowhere.
And I owe all of my readers a huge thank you for spending time in my worlds and with my characters. I love this wild, chaotic, and fun process. And as soon as I type those last words, I can’t wait to share my story with readers (after many, many edits 🙂 ).
Happy Reading! And if you have a question, please leave a comment here or find me on Facebook. I’m always happy to chat with readers!
